Typuslokalität:
Paraguay: Aguada bei Arroyo Trementina, einen Nebenfluß des Rio Aquido Canigi

Etymologie:
aureus (lat. = golden), frens (lat. = Stirn), in Anspielung auf die gelbe Stirnzeichnung

Diese Art sieht Corydoras flaveolus ziemlich ähnlich, jedoch hat C. aurofrenatus eine längere Dorsale.
